Four by Six

Four by Six is an exhibition of 4″x6″ artworks in Westobou’s MICRO gallery, on view April 3–25. Westobou members were invited to submit up to three hangable pieces, in any medium, with one constraint: the color green.

A few weeks before working on these, I visited MoMA and found myself lingering with three artists in particular—Louise Nevelson, Lygia Pape, and Ruth Asawa. Each approached structure and repetition in a way that stayed with me, and those ideas carried directly into the pieces I made for this show.

The first piece was inspired by Ruth Asawa’s Untitled (SF.045c, Potato Print – Branches, Purple/Blue) (c. 1951–1952). Her later work uses repetition to build intricate wire compositions. In this early piece, she used a potato as a stamp, layering bold paint to create a rhythm that feels both structured and organic.

The second piece grew out of my response to Lygia Pape’s Untitled (1956). Her subtle use of repeated geometric forms pushed me to think about rhythm across a surface. The slight three-dimensionality of the work also drew me in, giving it a presence that stood out even at a distance.

Nevelson’s Big Black (1963) influenced the third piece, especially in its emphasis on composition through assemblage. While her work relies on a monochrome palette and the scale contributes to the overall impact, what stood out to me was how distinct objects become unified through color and arrangement. I translated that idea into a small relief made of found and constructed elements, all painted in deep green. By flattening everything into a near-single tone, the focus shifts to shadow, spacing, and the relationships between forms.
